“A man may take to drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks. It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. [But] the process is reversible. Modern English,...

Pop Culture Expert Surprisingly Not Ashamed of...
According to reports, 29-year-old online commentator Caroline Shelham is somehow not completely ashamed of her own well-established identity as a “pop culture expert.” Shelham, who spends 10 hours every day consuming news updates on various entertainers and then commenting on their activities on an entertainment website, has reportedly shown no signs of humiliation or self-hatred...

Generations of Government Dependency in One Photo
A man gets on his knees next to a car carrying Barack Obama as he pulls away from Valois restaurant in Chicago.  This captures generations of conditioning people to look toward government to solve their problems in one photo.  This picture is truly worth a thousand words, and it’s genuinely sad.

Who is better informed about the policy choices facing the country—liberals or conservatives? According to a Zogby International survey that I write about in the May issue of Econ Journal Watch, the answer is unequivocal: The left flunks Econ 101.  [Story]

Distrust in U.S. Media Edges Up to Record High
For the fourth straight year, the majority of Americans say they have little or no trust in the mass media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly.  Perceptions of liberal bias still far outnumber perceptions of conservative bias. [Story]

How Many "Top Priority" Issues Does Obama Have?
Early in his administration, Mr. Obama also assigned the “top priority” label to his campaign promise to overhaul America’s health care system. But a check of his speeches since taking office, reflect a bevy of other “top priorities”… [Story]

New Job
I started work today at the Macaroni Grill in Fairfax.  I basically just walked in on Tuesday and got the job because they were desperate for bartenders.  Of course Larry was utterly useless in the transfer process, but it turned out to be more of a promotion than a transfer.  I’ll be working all day Friday in the bar and on Saturday nights.  Hopefully the extra cash flow will help stymie...

300 Shocker
Since about, oh, September 12, 2001, every writer, producer, director, and suit in this town has known one thing to be true: Don’t make fun of our so-called “enemies.”  Don’t stereotype them as bad guys. Don’t mock their beliefs. Don’t even mention their names. And for heaven’s sake, don’t make them mad. Instead, try to understand them. Celebrate their diversity. And realize that, in a world...

Tony Blair Blames Spate of Murders on Black...
Tony Blair yesterday claimed the spate of knife and gun murders in London was not being caused by poverty, but a distinctive black culture.  He said people had to drop their political correctness and recognize that the violence would not be stopped “by pretending it is not young black kids doing it”.  “When are we going to start saying this is a problem amongst a section of...

Will Britain One Day Be Muslim?
This week has been another terrible one for those of us who want a society in which all races, religions and cultures mix to their mutual advantage and enrichment. On Tuesday, five men were sentenced to life in prison for plotting to use a huge fertilizer bomb in what would have been the UK’s largest mass murder. [Story] These first and second generation immigrants responded to the ...

Next Frontier for NASA: Making Muslims "Feel Good"
NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a recent interview that his “foremost” mission as the head of America’s space exploration agency is to improve relations with the Muslim world. “When I became the NASA administrator — or before I became the NASA administrator — he charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want...

Barack Obama’s Top Ten Foreign Policy Follies
This has hardly been a stellar year for the projection of American global power. Weakness, rather than strength, has been the hallmark of US foreign policy under Barack Obama, from the Iranian nuclear crisis to dithering over the war in Afghanistan.  Here is a list of the ten biggest foreign policy follies of Barack Obama’s first year in office.

Conversation with a Born Again
Last week while I was bored, I noticed a friend’s Honesty Box on Facebook.  Her question read: “Want to tell me a secret?”  Since I didn’t have a secret to share, I decided to ask her what the meaning of life was.  She gave me a sort of vague and aimless “God” answer, which I won’t post because it’s not important.  But she ended with the words:...

IRS Visits Carwash in Pursuit of 4 Cents
It was every businessman’s nightmare.  Arriving at Harv’s Metro Car Wash in midtown Wednesday afternoon were two dark-suited IRS agents demanding payment of delinquent taxes. “They were deadly serious, very aggressive, very condescending,” says Harv’s owner, Aaron Zeff. The really odd part of this: The letter that was hand-delivered to Zeff’s on-site manager...

A troubled young woman whom Al Sharpton championed as a victim of a horrific, racially motivated sexual assault now says she fabricated the incident - despite the fact that all of her alleged attackers are serving jail time. Megan Williams, who is black, wasn’t kidnapped and tortured in a West Virginia trailer at the hands of white attackers - but lied because she wanted to get back...
